The last day to pay taxes without penalty is
Monday, March 2, 2026. Refer to the following
for more information and penalties.
Property Tax
The property tax bill covers a period of January 1st-December 31st. The 2026 tax bills were mailed on January 5, 2026. Your bill says the last day to pay without penalty is February 28, 2026 but since that date is a Saturday, by law, the last payment date is extended to Monday, March 2,
2026. Please note I will not be in the office on February 28, 2026. I will be in the office from 12pm – 5pm on Monday, March 2, 2026 to accept in person payments. The drop box will be closed at 5pm that day. All payments must be for the exact amount shown in the total tax due section of your bill.
Important: The postmark on your payment envelope determines the timeliness of your payment. The USPS has made a recent change and mail is now being postmarked at the regional USPS processing centers. The USPS advises that people mail early. If you are mailing your payment late, please have the envelope hand cancelled by your local post office showing the date, no later than March 2. If you put your envelope in the mail without asking for hand cancelling it will be postmarked after March 2 and you will owe a penalty. Metered mail does not contain a postmark. This includes payments made through your bank’s bill paying service. Metered mail will be considered as postmarked the date it is received in my office so it may be considered late with a penalty owed. Payments received or postmarked after March 2, 2026 will incur the following penalties:
- March 1 – March 31: 2%
- April 1 – April 30: 3%
- May 1 – May 31: 4% (plus a $2.00 rebilling fee.)
Returned checks: will incur a $20 fee which must be included with the new payment.
Checks must be made payable to: Tax Collector, Town of Clinton

- Whether you receive a bill or not, New York State Law states you are ultimately responsible for payment including all penalties. - Your United States Postal Service mailed payment is deemed timely or late based on the postmark that appears on the payment envelope. Real Property Tax Law § 925 provides that any mailed tax payment received with a postmark dated within the penalty-free period, as shown on your tax bill, is a timely payment. The envelope must contain a legible postmark. An envelope postmarked beyond the penalty-free period will result in a penalty. Not all mail will carry a postmark. Privately metered mail does not constitute a postmark. The only way to ensure timely payments through the mail is to bring your envelope to the Post Office on or before the due date to have it hand postmarked. Please check the envelope to ensure the postmark is legible before leaving the post office. Please note that neither the tax collector or any other town official has the authority to waive a penalty.
